Why do we write?
As one who has personally observed and experienced the actions of public assistance programs for most of my adult life, I am finally in a position to be set free. The reason I write is because I learned the truth and I know that in the same way that it set me free, it will set others free. My colleagues and my peers are all at different stages of deliverance, but the one thing we have in common is the truth and the willingness to share it.
I write because public assistance has not provided the journey of luxurious living that some would have you believe. Having raised 5 children, I don’t think I am any lazier than the woman who has a husband to support her as a stay at home mom. I have never had fake nails. I have never had a “weave”. I don’t dress in name brand clothing unless I find them at the thrift store. I don’t buy $100 tennis shoes. I never lived in a condo on the beach.
My children only knew what Nike’s were because they saw them on TV. They did without, but they were taught that it was because they did not need to be like everybody else. They were not raised in church but they know Jesus died to save them from their sins. When He saved me, He saved them from the cycle of poverty that could have so easily swallowed them up because of so many bad decisions on my part. Though some of them will tell you they pulled themselves up on their own, I know that Jesus is the number one reason why they turned out as well as they have. I write because He saves us inside out and from generation to generation.
I write because I know that somebody else needs to hear that they are not stupid, that they are not crazy, they are not lazy and that they are not alone. I write so that they no longer have to believe the lies this society has fed them about who they are. I write so that they will know that it’s okay to take a hard look at yourself, but I also write so they will know that they no longer need to ignore the hypocritical behavior of those who administer and legislate the programs they participate in. For many reasons, these are victims in the literal sense of the word, but they no longer have to live in that role. It takes a lot of hard work and sacrifice, but I write to let them know that freedom is possible.
Most of all, I write so that they will come to know who they are in Christ and so that the knowledge of who they are in Christ will equip them with the strength to recover from the injuries of life. I write so that they will know that they can be free! There is no prison cell or addiction that can keep you from the change that comes once Jesus has set your spirit free. Homelessness and poverty are not too big for Him. His sacrifice is for you and it is for today!
